10-year-old girl who pleaded for help from strangers months before was tortured to death by her father after jumping from an apartment window

A 10-year-old girl reportedly endured fatal abuse at the hands of her father and his girlfriend. This tragic event occurred just months after she bravely attempted to flee from their mistreatment by jumping out of a window, only to be pulled back by the police.

Rebecca Baptiste was discovered in July on an Arizona highway, emaciated and suffering from severe injuries, following years of neglect and physical abuse.

Her father, Richard Baptiste, 32, along with his girlfriend, Anisia Woods, 29, have since been arrested and charged with her murder.

Earlier, in October 2024, Rebecca managed to escape from her father’s apartment in Phoenix. She sought help from a homeless individual and a gas station employee, informing them about the abuse she faced from her stepmother.

After her escape, she was taken to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where authorities became involved. Rebecca recounted to the officers that she believed Woods was acting as if she were asleep and felt that she was in danger, prompting her to run away.

The report indicates that Woods had punished her by making her perform laps and hitting her with a brush, leaving visible bruises on her hands. Rebecca also mentioned being struck on her legs with a belt, showing officers red marks as proof.

During subsequent questioning, Woods denied the allegations and claimed that Rebecca had hurt herself.

Despite multiple allegations concerning Rebecca’s safety over several years, police found no sufficient evidence to prosecute the October incident, resulting in the case being closed a month later.

In July 2025, the family had relocated from Phoenix to a remote yurt in Apache County.

Rebecca was found on July 27, unresponsive and severely abused, suffering from malnutrition and sexual trauma.

Authorities reported that she bore extensive bruising all over her body, as well as burn marks consistent with cigarette burns. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries three days later in a hospital, with one doctor suggesting that she had been “tortured.”

Upon searching the family’s residence, law enforcement uncovered distressing evidence. They discovered numerous bloody paper towels and a clump of hair in the trash.

Baptiste and Woods confessed to physically disciplining Rebecca, yet faced severe charges including first-degree murder, aggravated assault, child abuse, and kidnapping.

Rebecca’s uncle expressed his belief that systemic failures contributed to her tragic demise. He noted that the couple reached out to child services after spotting warning signs of abuse.

He had made efforts to contact Rebecca and her younger siblings but reported being consistently rebuffed.

“We have extensive records of our interactions with them over the years and the concerns we raised,” he stated.

Both suspects are scheduled to appear in court again in January, with a trial set for June.
