A mother in Southern California has been sentenced to over 12 years in prison after admitting to her involvement in the torture and death of her 7-month-old son. She also created a story about his kidnapping to hide the crime.
Rebecca Haro, 41, entered a guilty plea on Friday to charges of felony child abuse and manslaughter in connection with the death of her son, Emanuel, whose remains have not been recovered.
Initially, Haro faced accusations of aiding her husband in abusing the child and fabricating the kidnapping narrative.
Although she previously pleaded not guilty to murder charges and making a false police report, her husband, Jake Haro, 32, pleaded guilty to murder in October and received a sentence of 25 years to life.
This tragic case emerged in August when Rebecca claimed that while changing Emanuel’s diaper in a San Bernardino parking lot, a Spanish-speaking man attacked her and took the baby.
The couple even appeared on TV, tearfully pleading for the return of their child. However, law enforcement found discrepancies in their statements, leading to their arrest on murder charges.
While Emanuel’s body remains missing, reports indicate that Jake Haro confessed to a fellow inmate that he killed the infant and discarded the body in a trash can.
Jake was on probation for another instance of child abuse in 2023, where his 10-week-old daughter from a previous relationship suffered lifelong disabilities due to his actions.
Despite prosecutors’ requests for him to be kept in custody, Jake managed to escape from prison related to that case.
Throughout the various proceedings, Rebecca maintained the story of her child’s abduction even from her prison cell. “I’m not giving up on my baby,” she told a local news outlet in August.
Prosecutors contended that Rebecca played a crucial role in her son’s demise. “Her choice not to intervene was a choice that permitted, if not precipitated, Emanuel’s death,” stated Assistant District Attorney Brandon Smith.
In the wake of this tragedy, the home where Emanuel was reportedly killed has been extensively renovated as the family of the child’s deceased parents attempts to help the community heal.
