Washington Monument to Celebrate 250th Anniversary with Light Show
As the new year approaches, the Washington Monument is set to become the tallest birthday candle in the world, featuring a stunning light display and fireworks to kick off the nationwide celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.
The initiative, named Freedom 250, aims to illuminate the National Mall obelisk with imagery representing “our nation’s discovery, expansion, independence, and vision for the future.” This nonprofit, spearheaded by President Donald Trump, was launched earlier in the month to plan the festivities for this historic milestone.
Keith Clack, CEO of Freedom 250, stated, “The lighting of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation, 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We invite all Americans and all of America’s friends to join us in this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit.”
The organization conducted lighting tests last week, unveiling a red, white, and blue star along with a projection of “250” on the monument—paying homage to George Washington, our first president.
Krach mentioned, “We will primarily focus on the four pillars of Freedom 250: innovation, community and faith, and the beauty of our country. The animation will engage audiences of all ages.”
On New Year’s Eve, a countdown will commence at midnight, with the monument showcasing 250-foot-tall birthday candles. This will culminate in what Freedom 250 describes as a “massive fireworks display,” leading to a “powerful visual finale” over the National Mall.
The America250 light show is slated to run from 7 PM to 11:30 PM, extending until 12:30 AM on New Year’s Eve.
Krach added, “Fireworks will indeed take place at midnight, and there will be another scheduled display on July 4th, which is expected to be the largest in history.”
A fireworks show will begin the closing ceremony at 7:55 PM.
This marks the first time that projections have been installed on all four sides of the monument. The last noteworthy display was in 2019, when NASA projected an image of a 363-foot-tall Saturn V rocket to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
When asked if President Trump’s image would be part of the monument, Clack responded, “No, I don’t think he will be reflected in the Washington Monument, but he has promised this 250th anniversary will be the biggest celebration in history.”
Clack explained, “That’s precisely why Freedom 250 was established, to create this kind of bipartisan movement.”
This event will kick off a series of major celebrations as Freedom 250 gears up for the big 250th birthday bash. Future events include a National Prayer Gathering in May, a Great American State Fair in June, and the Patriot Games set for the fall.
