Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace in New Year Message
Pope Leo XIV urged the faithful to create a year of peace by “disarming our hearts and refraining from all forms of violence” during his address to a crowd of about 40,000 in St. Peter’s Square. This event marked the Solemn New Year of Mary, Mother of God, which also coincided with World Day of Peace.
Beginning his message, the Pope extended wishes for peace in the new year and offered greetings to Italian President Sergio Mattarella. He reminded attendees that since 1968, January 1 has been recognized as World Day of Peace, initiated by Pope St. Paul VI.
Reflecting on this occasion, he shared that after being elected Bishop of Rome, he received the words, “Peace be with you all.” He emphasized that true peace is unarmed, a gift from God stemming from His unconditional love, and that fostering this peace is a shared responsibility.
The Pope posited that achieving peace necessitates action and highlighted the need to take risks to protect those who wish to worship freely. He reminded everyone that peace cannot be forcibly imposed; it requires a personal commitment to daily choices that reflect this aspiration.
He called upon Christians and others of goodwill to act without delay. “By the grace of Christ, let us begin today to disarm our hearts, abstain from all violence, and build a year of peace,” he stated. The Pope also expressed gratitude towards those already working on global peace initiatives, thanking individuals and organizations striving to resolve conflicts and encourage dialogue.
Pope Leo mentioned a national peace march that occurred in Catania, Italy, on December 31, and acknowledged the involvement of the Sant’Egidio community, known for its dedication to peace efforts. He welcomed students and teachers from Richland, New Jersey, who were attending the event.
As he wrapped up his address, the Pope reflected on the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi’s death, which ties closely to the theme of peace. He concluded with a Biblical blessing, asking God to bless and keep the people and grant them peace.
Lastly, Pope Leo entrusted the new year to Mary, Mother of God, requesting her guidance for humanity in the year ahead.
