Russia offers $500K reward for staged death to support Ukraine conflict

Kremlin’s Misjudgment: A Bounty Fuels the Enemy

For a moment, it seemed that the Kremlin had achieved a small but significant victory.

One of its most wanted adversaries, a notable anti-Putin figure fighting alongside Ukraine, was thought to have been killed in a drone strike.

However, just days later, it became clear that the Kremlin had been tricked. The $500,000 bounty they put on this individual’s head inadvertently financed the very conflict they were trying to turn in their favor.

Denis Kapustin, known as “White Rex,” emerged as a high-profile target for Russian intelligence. Reports claimed he had died on December 27 from a Ukrainian drone strike on the Southern Front.

Kapustin, a former soccer hooligan, has been banned from the Schengen Area since 2019 due to his promotion of neo-Nazi ideology. Regardless, he became a symbol of anti-Putin resistance while fighting for Ukraine.

For years, Russian intelligence had been monitoring Kapustin and had placed a bounty on him. Once news of his alleged death circulated, Moscow paid the reward, unaware it was effectively supporting their adversary.

Kapustin is the leader of the pro-Ukrainian Russian Volunteer Forces (RDK), established in 2022, which has executed cross-border operations into Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions.

After his reported death, the RDK acknowledged his passing on social media.

“We will take revenge, Dennis,” they stated. “Your legacy will live on.”

Yet, on New Year’s Day, Kapustin reappeared alive and well in a video from Ukraine’s military intelligence agency HUR.

General Kirillo Budanov, the head of HUR, greeted him and humorously noted the success in misleading Russian intelligence.

“Congratulations on your survival. It’s truly a pleasure. I’m glad the resources allocated for your assassination are being put to good use in our fight,” Budanov mentioned.

Additionally, a Ukrainian military commander confirmed that Kapustin remained within Ukrainian territories, ready to execute further assignments.

Before Kapustin moved to Ukraine in 2017, he and his family had relocated from Moscow to Germany at the age of 17.

In the initial phase of Russia’s large-scale invasion, he played a vital role in the establishment of Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade and was instrumental in defending Kyiv.

Following the reports of his demise, the III Corps remarked on their joint effort during the Battle of Kyiv.

“He recognized Ukraine as a bastion of true resistance and freedom,” they noted.

Kapustin founded the RDK with aspirations to overthrow Putin and end a system marred by lies and corruption.

In response, Russia labeled the RDK a terrorist group, subsequently sentencing him to life imprisonment in absentia for treason.

In March 2024, this group launched incursions into Russia, engaging military forces and taking Russian soldiers captive.

Kiev claims that although the RDK operates under their command, these cross-border actions were not directly sanctioned by Ukrainian authorities.

As the conflict stretched on, Ukraine undertook nighttime drone strikes across various Russian regions, targeting energy infrastructure, as the war extended to Day 1,409.

Areas in Krasnodar, Tatarstan, and Kaluga faced attacks, resulting in several fires at industrial sites. In Krasnodar, the Irsky refinery caught fire, and an energy storage facility in Almetyevsk sustained damage.

As the year began, accusations of civilian attacks traded between Russia and Ukraine intensified.

Moscow reported a deadly incident at a hotel in southern Ukraine, while Kiev claimed its strikes were focused solely on military and energy targets.

Ukrainian authorities noted civilian casualties elsewhere, with the governor of Kherson region reporting fatalities and injuries from an attack.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister indicated that railway facilities were also among the targets in different regions.

Historically known for their harsh tactics, Russian intelligence has faced repeated embarrassments as Ukrainian forces have outsmarted them throughout the conflict.

In one instance, Ukrainian intelligence agents even turned Russian operatives against their nation for financial gain, performing sabotage work instead.

Notably, several high-ranking Russian officials have been assassinated under suspicious circumstances, raising questions about Ukraine’s covert operations.

In one of the more notorious cases, Yaroslav Moskalik was killed by a bomb outside Moscow, while another former Ukrainian politician was shot in Spain.

Most recently, two senior Russian military figures died under mysterious circumstances, leading to further scrutiny of the effectiveness and reach of Ukrainian intelligence efforts.
