Rising Costs in 2026: What to Expect

These days, it certainly feels like everything is costing more.

In 2025, we saw significant increases in costs for food, healthcare, and utilities, amid ongoing worries about the rising cost of living.

As some economists pointed out recently, while there’s hope for improvement in the U.S. economy in 2026, affordability isn’t expected to get much better. Inflation has slowed down since hitting a 40-year high in 2022, but prices are still pretty steep.

Americans are probably going to keep facing higher prices for everyday items next year.

So, what can you expect to shell out more for in 2026? Here are some key areas:

PA Turnpike Toll Gate

Just a heads-up, tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike are set to increase by 4% starting on Sunday, January 4th.

The funds raised from this scheduled increase will go towards paying off debts that the state Legislature requires for transportation costs.

Interestingly, tolls billed through the Toll-by-Plate system are nearly 50% higher than those for E-ZPass customers who use transponders and automatic payments.

For example, driving from New Jersey to near Ohio on the Turnpike costs $60.06 with E-ZPass but is just under $115 with Toll-by-Plate. The new rates will be $62.54 and $119.57, respectively.

Specific Grocery Essentials

Rising food prices are something shoppers are sadly quite used to.

As we look ahead, overall prices are projected to remain steady, although some essential items are still expected to rise.

Coffee is facing double-digit inflation, and poor growing conditions in coffee-growing regions are expected to keep pushing prices up.

Then there’s chocolate, which will likely see a price hike due to weather-related production issues.

Beef prices are also anticipated to rise because the U.S. cattle herd is at its smallest in decades.

Health Insurance

If you’re relying on Affordable Care Act subsidies, prepare for significant increases in costs in 2026.

Unfortunately, Congress didn’t manage to extend expiring Obamacare premium subsidies, which leaves many facing steep hikes.

In Pennsylvania, around 500,000 enrollees in the state’s ACA marketplace are looking at an average premium increase of 102%.

This situation might force many consumers to skip coverage or opt for cheaper options.

Housing Prices

Housing prices continue to climb.

Zillow’s 12-month forecast suggests home prices will rise by roughly 2% between November 2025 and November 2026.

On a brighter note, new home buyers might find more inventory available and mortgage rates could drop slightly to about 6.3%.

Home Insurance

Staying on the housing theme, don’t forget that home insurance premiums are also on the rise.

In 2025, home insurance prices increased, with new policies seeing an average spike of 8.5%.

The industry cites various factors, including rising construction costs and an increased risk of natural disasters.

This trend seems set to persist into the new year, with predictions of an additional 8% increase in 2026.

Smartphones

If you’re thinking about getting a new smartphone, it might be wise to make that decision sooner rather than later.

The demand for AI is pushing chip production toward data centers, which means less availability for smartphones and similar devices.

Analysts expect smartphone prices could increase by 3% to 5%.

Electricity Bills

Many Pennsylvania residents will notice spikes in their electricity bills in the new year.

The Public Utilities Commission recently notified residents that energy supply prices for all power companies they regulate would be adjusting on December 1st.

For those who don’t shop around for an electricity provider, expect rate increases—PPL rates went up by 3.7%, PECO rates by 6%, and Met-Ed rates by 8.9%.

Streaming Services

Several streaming services, including HBO Max, Disney+, and Peacock, have already announced price hikes for 2026.

For instance, Paramount+ subscribers will see a price increase starting January 15, 2026. If you’re on the Essential plan with ads, the cost will rise from $7.99 to $8.99 per month, while ad-free premium plans will range from $12.99 to $13.99 per month.
