A Boy’s Christmas Rescue

An 8-year-old boy was joyfully reunited with three brave police officers from Suffolk County who rescued him after he fell into a frozen pond on Christmas Day.

Tayvion, a third-grader, was trying to take a shortcut across a partially frozen pond near his home in Patchogue when the ice gave way beneath him.

With a grateful smile, the boy thanked officers Andrew Tirelli, James Rizzo, and Michael Santillo before hugging them tightly. They received recognition on Friday for their quick actions that saved Tayvion, whose family preferred not to disclose their last name.

On that chilly Christmas afternoon, Tayvion clung to the remaining ice, calling out for help. A 911 call came in just after 1 p.m., prompting a quick response from the police and community members who had gathered around.

When officers Tirelli and Rizzo arrived, they attempted to rescue Tayvion using a life preserver and rope. However, he struggled to hold on, making it difficult for them to pull him to safety.

As the situation grew dire, Sergeant Santillo decided to take immediate action. He crawled across the precarious ice to reach the boy, even as the ice fractured beneath him.

Fortunately, Santillo was tall enough to stand in the frigid water, allowing him to pull Tayvion out with his bare hands. “Freedom!” the boy shouted in exhilaration when he was finally out of the icy grip of the pond, a moment captured on police body cameras.

During a ceremony held that Friday, Tayvion and the three officers were celebrated. Police Chief Kevin Catalina noted that while many were at home enjoying Christmas, these officers were diligently on patrol to ensure the community’s safety.

He also expressed a sobering reminder, stating, “This story has a happy ending, but too often, the ending is very different.” He encouraged residents to steer clear of ponds in the winter and opt for safe skating rinks instead.

Tayvion wholeheartedly agreed, looking directly into the camera as he emphatically warned, “Don’t walk on the ice!”
