Buccaneers win against Panthers 16-14; NFC South championship depends on Saints-Falcons game

Bucs Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Narrow Win Over Panthers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers managed to stay in the playoff race by defeating the Carolina Panthers 16-14 on Saturday. The NFC South championship will hang on the outcome of Sunday’s match between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints, with the Falcons already out of playoff contention.

Carolina had a shot to secure the division title with a victory over Tampa Bay. However, they’ll now need the Falcons to beat the Saints in order to leverage a tiebreaker and retain the division lead.

If the Saints win, it could hand the NFC South title to the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers are aiming for their fifth straight district title. On the other hand, the Panthers haven’t clinched the district since 2015, when they, led by coach Ron Rivera and quarterback Cam Newton, finished with a stellar 15-1 record and reached the Super Bowl. Interestingly, every other team in the NFC South has claimed at least one division title since then.

Unfortunately for Carolina, their hopes dimmed on Saturday when Baker Mayfield connected with Cade Otton for a touchdown, and Chase McLaughlin added three field goals to give the Bucs the narrow victory. Carolina faced a tough situation in their final series, needing to make a comeback.

After McLaughlin’s 38-yard field goal attempt was blocked with a little over five minutes left, the Panthers took a brief lead with a touchdown pass from Bryce Young to Jalen Coker. But the game concluded with Carolina fumbling during a frantic series of laterals.

Earlier, Mayfield’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Otton marked a strong start for the Buccaneers, who took an early 7-0 lead. It was Otton’s first touchdown of the season.

Down 10-0, the Panthers quickly responded by converting Christian Roseboom’s interception into an 8-yard touchdown pass from Young to Tommy Tremble, narrowing the gap to 10-7.

As the first half drew to a close, Jacob Parrish intercepted Young again, allowing McLaughlin to kick a 36-yard field goal and put the Buccaneers ahead 13-7 at halftime.

McLaughlin added a 48-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to extend the Bucs’ lead. However, the Panthers struggled with a fumble on their first drive of the third quarter, complicating their comeback efforts.

Despite a solid start, Mayfield had a miscommunication, missing a wide-open Payne Durham in the end zone after completing his first six passes. The Bucs then took a 10-0 lead thanks to McLaughlin’s field goal.
