Myles Garrett Sets New Single-Season Sack Record
In the latest NFL game, history was made as Myles Garrett emerged as the new leader for single-season sacks.
Garrett surpassed the records held by both Michael Strahan and TJ Watt, notching his 23rd sack of the season. It’s likely that some fans will, perhaps, view this record with a hint of skepticism—much like Strahan’s notable achievement in 2001, which was accomplished during a shorter 16-game season. Yet, regardless of the context, Garrett’s season is undeniably impressive.
Achieving this milestone wasn’t a walk in the park for Garrett. While he had managed to accumulate 21.5 sacks over the first 14 games, his performance dipped significantly over the past weeks. Just ahead of this game, he only managed one sack in Week 16 and was unable to record any the week prior.
However, with just over five minutes left in the game against the Bengals, Garrett found his moment. He tackled quarterback Joe Burrow, securing his record-breaking sack with a powerful leap off the right side of the line. Burrow, feeling the heat, went down before Garrett could fully engage him.
Garrett’s journey to this record has been a mix of ups and downs. He also has a solid chance of earning his second Defensive Player of the Year title, having previously won the award in 2023. This year marks his first time leading the NFL in sacks, and throughout his career, which began in 2017, he has accumulated 124.5 total sacks.
Interestingly, Garrett, who recently celebrated his 30th birthday, had requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns in hopes of finding a winning team. But a staggering $160 million contract led him to reconsider, and he seems to be making every dollar count.
As if the season couldn’t get better, the Browns also clinched a victory against the Bengals with a last-minute field goal, adding to the excitement and tension of the game.
