Maduro and Wife to Appear in U.S. Court on Charges

Reports indicate that Nicolás Maduro, the socialist leader of Venezuela, along with his wife Cilia Flores, is set to appear in a U.S. federal court on Monday facing narco-terrorism charges.

A spokesperson for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York confirmed to CBS News that the couple “will appear in federal court Monday at 12 p.m.”

Following their arrival in New York on Saturday, the court appearance comes after President Donald Trump announced their arrest.

According to CBS News, the spokesperson mentioned that this will be Maduro’s first court appearance on criminal charges since he was taken from Venezuela during a military operation in Caracas earlier that day.

Maduro and Flores reportedly arrived in New York on Saturday afternoon after being moved from their Caracas home to the military ship Iwo Jima, and subsequently brought to the U.S. for the charges.

On Saturday, Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed that the couple has been indicted in the Southern District of New York.

Bondi detailed that “Nicolás Maduro is charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of a machine gun and a destructive device, and conspiracy to possess a machine gun and a destructive device against the United States.”

NPR indicated that the proceedings will be presided over by U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein.

President Trump proclaimed a significant action against Venezuela, stating that Maduro and his wife had been “captured and exiled.” He expressed this in a post on Truth Social, claiming, “The United States has successfully launched a major attack on Venezuela and its leader.”

Video footage shared on X showed Maduro in handcuffs, flanked by agents, where he was also heard saying, “Good night and Happy New Year.”

Additional footage captures Maduro’s greeting while walking in New York.
