"This Could Have Been Averted": North Carolina Teacher Passes Away While Speaking With 911

Tragic Death of North Carolina Teacher During Home Invasion

A teacher from North Carolina lost her life on January 3 while trying to call for help as a man invaded her home and assaulted her.

The Raleigh Police Department reported that officers arrived at the scene of a residential burglary around 6:33 a.m., where they found Zoe Welsh critically injured. She was taken to a hospital but sadly did not survive her injuries.

Welsh had called 911 to inform them of the break-in. It seems the attack began while she was still on the line with emergency services. Police were able to apprehend the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Ryan Camacho, who now faces charges of felony murder and robbery related to Welsh’s death.

Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce expressed his deep sorrow over Welsh’s passing. He stated, “My heart aches for this mother, friend, and mentor to so many in our community, and the unimaginable trauma that her family has had to endure. My heart goes out to Ms. Welsh’s family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Boyce emphasized that every lost life in the community impacts everyone, saying, “The arrest of the suspect sends a strong message that criminal activity will not be tolerated in the City of Raleigh.” He also praised the quick actions of the responding officers, which led to the swift arrest of the suspect.

Welsh was a respected science teacher and head of the science department at Ravenscroft School, where she was recognized with the Qubain Award for teaching excellence in 2013. One of her former students, Carisa Soles, described her as “a great soul” and lamented the tragedy, noting, “This could have been prevented. She was literally the kindest person.”

Camacho, the suspect, has a lengthy criminal record. He has spent over five years in prison and was convicted in 2019 for discharging a firearm in occupied property, along with several misdemeanors.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into Welsh’s death, with Camacho expected to appear in court on January 5.

Both the Raleigh Police Department and Ravenscroft School were reached for comments but had not responded at the time.
