Mayor Takes Action Against Hidden Charges
Mayor Zoran Mamdani has signed two executive orders aimed at addressing junk fees and tricky subscription practices that ensnare unsuspecting New Yorkers, leading them into small yet burdensome debts.
During an announcement at an outdoor gym in Long Island City, he pointed out that gyms are particularly notorious for unfair fees and deceptive subscriptions. It’s something many of us can relate to—paying extra charges that seem to come out of nowhere.
Mamdani remarked, “This isn’t just an issue for gyms. It’s also a part of purchasing concert tickets, booking flights, or even dealing with credit card bills and rent.” He emphasized that small fees, like $5 or $10, can really add up over time.
These additional charges not only complicate life for residents but also showcase how some corporations and unscrupulous landlords seem to disregard the struggles of working individuals.
The first order establishes a task force dedicated to rooting out companies that impose hidden fees on their customers.
The second order focuses on empowering the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to tackle subscription traps, as officials outlined. This effort aligns with state Attorney General Letitia James’ recent action, including a hefty $600,000 fine against upscale gym Equinox for making it overly complicated for customers to cancel memberships.
James, who was present at Mamdani’s press conference alongside City Council President-elect Julie Menin and City Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner Samuel Levine, noted that these hidden costs often carry different names—like service fees or surcharges—but ultimately, they remain hidden from consumers.
Mamdani has also appointed former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan to review the city’s consumer protection laws. He believes cracking down on these fees is essential to achieving his goals of making life more affordable in New York City.
“It’s tough enough living here without the constant fear of being taken advantage of,” he added.
