Arizona Supreme Court building cleared out after package shows traces of explosives

Suspicious Package Found at Arizona Supreme Court

On Monday morning, a potentially dangerous package was found in the mailroom of the Arizona Supreme Court. This discovery led to an immediate evacuation of the courthouse and several nearby government buildings, according to officials.

The package was identified around 8 a.m. and contained multiple vials, with two testing positive for an unspecified homemade explosive, as reported by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

As a precaution, buildings including the state court facilities, the Department of Education, and the Attorney General’s Office were evacuated. Fortunately, the Supreme Court wasn’t in session at the time.

Authorities kept the courthouse closed while they secured the area. They continued to carefully examine and dispose of packages from the downtown Phoenix site into the late afternoon.

Technicians in protective gear safely removed the hazardous materials from the Supreme Court and placed them in a containment unit. The explosives were then transported by police convoy to a secure location for detonation.

It was expected that employees could re-enter the building by 3:30 p.m., with a return to normal operations scheduled for Tuesday, as reported.

Alberto Rodriguez, the communications director for the Arizona Supreme Court, expressed his concerns about the incident. “There were a lot of questions we didn’t fully understand when we evacuated staff,” he reflected. He added that, while he couldn’t speak for everyone, such threats made him uneasy, especially since it escalated to the Supreme Court level.

Details on the package’s origin or the specific threat it posed remain unclear. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
