Tim Allen Shares Insights on Hollywood Investing

Tim Allen, the well-known comedian, recently discussed his experiences related to investing in Hollywood films during an appearance on “Bill Maher and Club Random.” The 72-year-old reflected on a conversation he had with former President Donald Trump regarding the complexities and risks involved in movie investments, particularly when he sensed Trump’s dwindling interest in funding such projects.

Allen recounted, “Trump asked, ‘Let’s say you build a studio together and the movie costs over a million dollars. You’ve got to at least double that for promotion. That’s a lot of people involved. What if ticket sales are low?'” At that point, Allen explained the reality of losses in the industry, saying, “You lose money, but you might get some tax benefits.” This moment seemed to signal to Trump that investing in movies wasn’t for him anymore.

He added, “He likened it to owning a bad building. If it doesn’t sell, at least you still have it. But with a bad movie, well, that’s not so straightforward.” It’s clear that the movie business can be quite unforgiving.

In previous conversations, Allen has openly expressed his conservative views. He discussed his feelings on taxes and how they impacted his earnings. “When I started making money, it felt like I had a partner who took almost half of my profits—taxes,” he noted, emphasizing his longstanding frustration with the tax system.

During a past podcast interview with Marc Maron in 2021, Allen explained why he prefers to stay out of political discussions. “I don’t preach anything. I enjoyed not getting involved after realizing that voicing opinions could cause a stir.” His choice to remain neutral seems to stem from a desire to avoid conflict.

Looking back on his initial encounter with Trump, Allen relayed, “I met him at a charity event ages ago. My approach was to observe and gauge what he would do. Let’s not disrupt the flight while it’s still in the air.” This perspective shows his cautious outlook on politics.
