White House introduces new website outlining the events of the Capitol breach on January 6

New White House Website Reflects on January 6 Events

The White House has launched a fresh website detailing the events that unfolded during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump. This initiative seems to target Democratic lawmakers, who, according to the site, promoted misleading narratives about the protests to suppress political dissent.

The website asserts, “Democrats have cleverly skewed reality since January 6 by labeling peaceful demonstrators as ‘insurrectionists’ and depicting the event as a violent coup planned by Trump, despite a lack of evidence for armed rebellion or attempts to overthrow the government.”

It continues by suggesting that it was actually the Democrats who instigated the true riot, citing claims that the White House deemed the 2020 election “rigged” and accused them of using federal agencies to pursue their detractors.

“The chaos that ensued was, in part, due to security oversights by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which were then seized upon to strengthen their position,” the website claims. “This campaign of misinformation allowed them to pursue innocent Americans, stifle opposition, and divert attention from their own role in compromising democratic principles.”

Tuesday marked the fifth anniversary of the protests, which have continued to influence U.S. political discourse under the Biden administration and leading into the 2024 elections. The new website appears to reframe these protests, which Democrats have often characterized as dark events in American history.

The site includes significant historical points, such as black-and-white photos of Democratic figures investigating the Capitol breach, along with a timeline of Trump supporters gathering in Washington, D.C. detailed reports mention security shortcomings on January 6, primarily attributed to politically motivated decisions from Democratic leadership and the Department of Defense.

The January 6 special committee was responsible for the initial investigation and referred the case against Trump to prosecutors in 2022. The commission has drawn criticism from Trump and his allies, who argue that Congressional entities destroyed evidence linked to the investigation, as detailed in the House Administration Subcommittee’s report from December 2024.

The website features a timeline of events from January 6, which begins with Trump’s “call to action” encouraging Americans to come to Washington for a “peaceful and historic demonstration.” It allows visitors to navigate through key moments of the day, including highlights of Trump’s speech, the march on Capitol Hill, escalating tensions with Capitol Police, and leaked footage exposing security failures.

On that day, Trump supporters gathered outside the Capitol during the Congressional certification of electoral votes, which affirmed Joe Biden’s presidency. Pelosi, a prominent figure in the inquiry, was seen taking “responsibility” for the security mishaps during the unrest.

According to the website, “Leaked video captured by Pelosi’s daughter demonstrates her acknowledging ‘I take responsibility’ for the failures in security during the turmoil.” It adds that Pelosi had previously declined Trump’s offer of 10,000 troops for security, raising questions about the preparedness for such an event.

Pelosi’s office responded, arguing that the focus on the video suits a narrative that avoids accountability for security decisions, which were under the purview of Capitol Police. In a response to the new website and its implications regarding Pelosi, Speaker Ian Crager criticized the “out-of-context clips” aimed at minimizing the significance of what he called the “deadly insurrection.”

In her own statement on the anniversary of the events, Pelosi described January 6 as an “attempted coup” driven by a “violent insurrection incited by the president.” She emphasized that this was an effort to overturn millions of votes and the will of the American people, though, ultimately, democracy prevailed that day.

January 6 was a pivotal moment in Trump’s presidency, leading to significant legal battles and his second impeachment. Democrats pointed to his rhetoric as inciting violence, while separate investigations into potential election interference also emerged.

Revisiting January 6, Trump has claimed he instructed supporters to march “peacefully and patriotically” and has characterized the day as a “day of love,” suggesting that many involved were unfairly prosecuted. Upon returning to office in January 2025, Trump pardoned around 1,600 individuals convicted or awaiting trial related to the incident.

The website notes that “Trump corrected a historic wrong by freeing unjustly punished Americans, restoring fairness under the law.” It highlights his return to the White House on Inauguration Day 2025, where he granted numerous pardons to January 6 defendants, whom he regards as patriots wrongly targeted.

In ongoing legal matters, President Trump is pursuing a defamation lawsuit against the BBC over a documentary that aired before the 2024 presidential election, which included edited clips of his January 6 speech. The BBC acknowledged a misjudgment regarding the editing but declined to offer financial compensation. Meanwhile, the edited footage is featured on the newly revamped White House website.
