New York City Mayor’s Salary Matches Predecessor
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s annual salary is set to be around $260,000, which is the same as what former Mayor Eric Adams earned. This figure comes from public payroll records, revealing Adams’ total salary was $258,750.
In the past, Mamdani made approximately $142,000 as a state legislator, indicating an increase of about 80% in his income. His office hasn’t yet commented on whether he plans to accept the full salary or share some of it.
Testing a Progressive Economic Vision
New York City often leads as the priciest location in the United States, with housing costs significantly higher than the national average. With a salary of around $260,000, Mamdani finds himself among the city’s highest earners, making over three times the average household income of about $80,000, according to recent Census Bureau data.
Earlier in December, Mamdani announced via Instagram that he and his wife, Rama, would be relocating from their Astoria, Queens home to Gracie Mansion— the mayor’s free residence located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Addressing Controversial Topics
Mamdani’s move to Gracie Mansion was motivated, he noted, by concerns for family safety and a desire to fully focus on implementing his affordability agenda, which voters endorsed.
On January 1, he made history as New York’s 112th mayor, being the first Muslim to hold this position. During his inauguration, he emphasized the need for a government that reflects its people and remains steadfast against corporate greed.
“City Hall will stand firm on issues of safety, affordability, and abundance,” he stated during his inaugural address. “We will answer an age-old question: Who does New York belong to? The answer is simple: It belongs to all who live in it.”
