New York City Mayor Faces Online Backlash Over World Cup Ticket Claims
Newly sworn-in Mayor of New York City, Zoran Mamdani, has found himself the subject of online mockery after community posts highlighted inconsistencies in his promises.
The self-described socialist Muslim mayor openly criticized the dynamic pricing model of World Cup soccer tickets, which he argued has made them unaffordable for average fans. He expressed that his administration would strive to rectify this issue.
“We want to make the experience more enjoyable for every New Yorker,” Mamdani remarked. He recalled a conversation with a resident who was disheartened by the $600 price tag for a ticket to the World Cup. He added, “This is becoming increasingly out of reach. We’ve turned what was once a game for the working class into a luxury affair. Many people just want to enjoy watching the World Cup on TV, regardless of where it is held.”
However, his statements were soon ridiculed on social media, especially after comments were flagged by community notes. Critiques pointed out that “the Mayor has no influence over FIFA’s pricing” and that no matches are scheduled to take place in New York City, as the venue is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Many users highlighted this awkward situation, with responses like, “Calm down. It’s in New Jersey. Sure, it’s close, but it’s not New York.”
Another user quipped, “LOL… this guy seems to think he’s in charge of everything. Mayor Mamdani claims he’s working to make World Cup tickets accessible… but guess what? No games are in New York…”
One commentator joked about taking control of ticketing methods, further emphasizing the absurdity of the mayor’s claims.
Mamdani’s office was contacted for a response, but no statement had been provided as of yet.
The media has labeled Mamdani’s more extreme views as moderate, but his recent actions have stirred controversy, especially following his abrupt resignation from a previous position overseeing tenant protection and appointments.
