Tragic Passing of Congressman Doug LaMalfa

California Congressman Doug LaMalfa, a Republican, unfortunately passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65.

“Early this morning, Congressman Doug LaMalfa returned home to be with the Lord. He left a lasting legacy of servant-leadership and kindness in the Upstate,” stated Mark Spanagel, LaMalfa’s chief of staff. “Congressman LaMalfa cared deeply about the people he served and worked tirelessly to protect the government’s word to restore crumbling forests, build reservoirs, and ensure people were free to choose what was best for them.”

Authorities reported that LaMalfa experienced a medical emergency at home and was taken to the hospital, where he later died during surgery. An investigation by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office is currently underway, with an autopsy scheduled to determine the cause of death.

“In accordance with standard procedure, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death. An autopsy will be performed by a forensic pathologist,” the statement confirmed.

This news comes just a day after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) resigned, leaving the House with 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats. LaMalfa’s death reduces the Republican count to 218, increasing the pressure on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) as Democrats prepare for the forthcoming special election. Texas will hold runoff elections later this month with two Democratic senators competing, and New Jersey’s election to fill the seat of Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill is also on the horizon.

LaMalfa, a prominent representative from California, has served as the Congressional District Chair since 2013. He chaired the Western Congressional Caucus and had been a vocal advocate for rural and agricultural issues.

A fourth-generation rice farmer, LaMalfa had a significant influence on California’s water policies, participating in key committees such as Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Transportation and Infrastructure. However, the redrawing of the congressional map has made his prospects for re-election in 2026 more challenging, leaning the district toward Democrats.

Expressions of condolences came from various political figures across party lines.

“Congress is shocked this morning to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Doug LaMalfa,” said Speaker Johnson. “He was as fierce a fighter for the vast natural resources and beauty of our state as we have ever known.”

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) added, “A fourth-generation rice farmer, Congressman LaMalfa cared for his community, worked forcefully to protect California’s farmers, and served the people he represented with principled purpose, from the state legislature to the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Former President Donald Trump fondly recalled LaMalfa during a speech before the House Republican Conference on Tuesday.

“Before we go any further, I would like to express my great sadness at the loss of a great Congressman, a great, great, great Congressman, Congressman Doug LaMalfa,” President Trump stated.

According to California law, Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) can call for a special election within 14 days, which must occur within 140 days—potentially as soon as June.
