Michael Edward Reagan Passes Away

Michael Edward Reagan, the eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan, died on Sunday, January 4, 2026, after a battle with cancer. His passing represents a significant loss for those who valued his efforts to uphold and promote his father’s legacy. Tributes have emerged from various corners of the conservative movement, acknowledging his steadfast dedication to sharing Ronald Reagan’s principles and motivating the youth to carry them forward.

Michael played an essential role at the Young America Foundation (YAF), especially at the Reagan Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. He was a familiar presence at student events at Rancho del Cielo, often bridging the gap between his father’s experiences and the students eager to learn about them.

Scott Walker, Chairman of YAF, expressed his admiration, noting, “Michael Reagan inspired many, particularly the students at YAF who gathered at the Reagan Ranch. He not only recounted stories of his father but also encouraged the next generation to advocate for the values he championed in public life. He urged them to be passionate warriors in protecting the Republic’s founding principles.”

Walker reminisced about his initial encounter with Michael Reagan while driving to the Wisconsin state capitol. He later got to know him personally through his role with YAF. He shared that their final discussion took place on December 22, 2025, during which they talked about health and a hopeful future visit.

“It’s unfortunate that the good Lord decided to take him home early,” Walker added. “But we spoke about his faith and commitment to Jesus, which brings some comfort, knowing he is with the Lord now.”

Andrew Coffin, YAF Vice-President and Ranch Director, also paid tribute to Michael, stating, “This week we lost an American hero and a devoted family man. Michael’s perspective on Ronald Reagan is irreplaceable. From the start, he collaborated with YAF to impart his father’s ideas to younger audiences.”

Coffin emphasized Michael’s unique ability to connect youth with Ronald Reagan’s legacy. He highlighted how Michael often opened YAF’s high school conferences and helped attendees understand the correlation between Reagan’s ranch life and his values.

In talking about Michael, Coffin described him as a “naturally gifted communicator” who preferred to speak freely, relating anecdotes that illuminated his father’s character and beliefs, along with insights into his policies. “Students felt a sense of trust in Michael that mirrored what made his father a successful leader,” he noted.

Michael’s influence extended beyond YAF and talk radio. As president of the Reagan Legacy Foundation, he was a formidable conservative advocate propelling his father’s ideals. He openly supported Donald Trump while contending that Trump needed to steer the country back on course without undermining Reagan’s legacy. “We need strong leadership again,” he stated, urging vigilance against left-leaning movements.

After news of his death broke, reactions from the conservative community were swift. Political reporter Cameron Arcand expressed sorrow over Michael’s passing, while commentator Mary Walter remembered him as “a gentleman and a kind man,” often engaging in late-night discussions despite time differences. Others, like Vince Colyanese, remembered him fondly as a good guy and radio host.

Floyd Brown, a former radio host, mentioned Michael’s pivotal role in preserving the Reagan Ranch from development threats. Guy Benson of Fox News called him “a lovely, vibrant man” and YAF’s Spencer Brown remarked on Michael’s lasting impact, emphasizing how he ensured that youth understood the essence of Ronald Reagan.

Gabriela Hoffman, a director at the Independent Women’s Forum, shared her sadness upon learning of Michael’s death, recalling her gratefulness toward Ronald Reagan for aiding her parents who were exiles from the Soviet Union. Journalists and political figures alike expressed their shock and condolences, recognizing both Michael’s legacy and his warmth.

Michael Reagan is survived by his wife Colleen, son Cameron, and daughter Ashley. In concluding the eulogy, Andrew Coffin remarked, “Michael, you made a difference. Your voice strengthened and freed this country, and your efforts to convey your father’s lessons to young Americans ensure that those values will endure.”
