Trump Broadens Strict 'Travel Ban,' Progressives Are Surprisingly Silent

Trump Expands Immigration Restrictions Impacting Muslim Immigration

President Donald Trump has broadened immigration restrictions to include 39 countries, with the Cato Institute suggesting that this could reduce Muslim immigration by about 40%.

Interestingly, immigration advocates seem to be mostly quiet on the matter, despite the significant nature of these new regulations. This is quite a shift from 2017 when there were widespread protests against Trump’s “Muslim travel ban.” Many were vocal, particularly back when he implemented less severe restrictions early in his presidency.

Mark Krikorian from the Center for Immigration Studies noted the absence of reaction, pointing out that this new rule is much more extensive than previous ones.

Trump’s latest measures even affect the spouses and children of legal immigrants, which raises eyebrows. This lack of pushback signifies how effectively Trump has navigated the conversation about immigration since his election in 2016.

These travel restrictions follow Trump’s sweeping actions to curb illegal immigration at the southern border, rescinding the provisional status for over a million immigrants labeled as “unacceptable” and hastening the removal of numerous undocumented individuals. He has also started to tighten visa programs, which, as some argue, detract from skilled American workers.

Impact on Muslim Immigration

The estimation of a 40% decline in Muslim immigration comes from advocates at the Cato Institute. They report that Trump’s new proclamation targets almost all legal immigration from nearly 40 countries, affecting about one in five legal immigrants, which could mean around 400,000 immigrants over three years. The ban allows some exceptions for certain workers and travelers but notably excludes legal rights for spouses, children, or parents of U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Over one in five legal permanent immigrants might find themselves impacted by this ban—33% of African immigrants and 42% of those from mainly Muslim nations, according to the data.

The restrictions could significantly hinder Muslim immigration into major U.S. cities, like New York, which has a vibrant Muslim community. Notably, this community recently elected a Muslim mayor, which underscores their growing political influence.

In light of shifting political tides, many corporate leaders have distanced themselves from pro-immigration stances. Individuals like Larry Fink of BlackRock and Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook have notably remained silent on the issue. This is telling, especially given the current polarization around immigration matters in the United States.

The so-called silent elite includes influential figures who typically advocate for immigrants but seem to be retreating from vocal support recently. Some even argue there’s a pressing need for an immigration system that respects and incorporates diverse cultures while remaining cohesive.

While the administration has meticulously presented justifications for the travel restrictions, citing issues like visa overstays, many observers see the lack of progressive engagement as troubling. There’s a sense that progressive voices have been subdued, perhaps due to disillusionment with the current political climate under President Biden, especially when it comes to immigration policies.

Krikorian expressed skepticism about a potential progressive shift in immigration perspectives, emphasizing that signs of meaningful change are minimal. He remains cautiously hopeful but is unsure about the actual outcomes.
