U.S. Seizes Russian-Flagged Tanker Tied to Venezuelan Oil

The United States recently took control of a Russian-flagged tanker associated with Venezuelan oil in the North Atlantic. This operation was executed flawlessly, with support from British military forces.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced this significant action in a social media update.

She described the pre-dawn operations, detailing how the Coast Guard conducted two consecutive boardings of “ghost fleet” vessels, one in the North Atlantic and the other in international waters near the Caribbean.

Noem spoke specifically about the motor tanker M/V Bella 1, which underwent a name change to marinera and was registered under the Russian flag. It had recently left Venezuela or was en route there.

The U.S. European Command permits boarding of sanctioned ships like the Bella 1, especially after monitoring it for over two weeks across the Atlantic.

This stateless vessel had become the latest target of U.S. Coast Guard efforts due to heightened tensions surrounding Venezuela.

The seizure was a coordinated effort among several agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. military officials. They acknowledged on social media the ongoing tracking of the vessel, which had been attempting to bypass a U.S. oil blockade around Venezuela.

Reports mentioned that military aircraft were deployed toward the tanker during this pursuit.

The ship has been accused of carrying Iranian crude oil contrary to U.S. sanctions. Historically, it transported Venezuelan oil, but reports suggest it’s currently empty.

Additionally, a Russian submarine and other support vessels had been dispatched to guide the tanker across the Atlantic.

Following the seizure, the U.S. military transferred control of the Bella 1 to law enforcement agencies. Officials spoke to the Associated Press under the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the operation.

Allegedly, the tanker was sanctioned in 2024 for smuggling cargo to firms linked with Iranian-backed militant activities.

Previously, in December, there was an attempt to board the vessel while it was heading to Venezuela, but it eluded capture at that time and crossed the Atlantic.

During this period, the Bella 1 had its name officially changed to marinera, and records confirm the crew painted over the ship’s details to reflect the Russian flag.

Homeland Security Secretary Noem stated in December that the Coast Guard had also seized a second oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela with military assistance.

In a recent update, the British Ministry of Defense confirmed its support for the U.S. efforts to seize the Russian-flagged tanker, including involvement from a Royal Air Force aircraft.

British Defense Secretary John Healy commented on this operation, stating:

“Today, our British troops showcased their skills in aiding the successful interception of the U.S. ship Bela 1 as it was heading toward Russia. This action is part of a broader strategy to combat sanctions violators.”

He continued, emphasizing the vessel’s troubled past and its connection to an axis of sanctions evasion fueled by Russian and Iranian interests that exacerbates conflicts worldwide.

“The UK will persist in its efforts against this kind of activity, as it is essential to protect our national security and contribute to global stability.”
