House Oversight Hearing Focuses on Somali Community and Fraud Allegations
During a House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) questioned witnesses regarding the alleged fraud linked to the Somali community in Minnesota. He specifically discussed the dependency on government assistance among Somali households in the state.
Gill pointed out, “Do you know what percentage of Somali households in Minnesota are on food stamps? It’s 54%.” He then pressed further, asking about the statistics for households led by Minnesota-born individuals, suggesting a stark contrast.
As Gill pushed for clarity, he interrupted former federal prosecutor Brendan Barrow as he began to respond. “7%,” Gill stated decisively, emphasizing the significant gap between the two figures. Barrow noted the complexity in Gill’s comparisons, mentioning that many Somalis are indeed American-born.
Continuing his line of questioning, Gill stated that 81% of Somali-head households are on welfare, and after a decade in the U.S., that number remains high at 78%. His remarks coincide with an increased focus from Republicans on fraud cases in Minnesota, where authorities have recently uncovered numerous scams posing as various services, reportedly defrauding the state of up to $9 billion.
Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) revealed that nearly 100 individuals have been indicted, the majority of whom are of Somali descent. Gill challenged whether the Somali community enhances Minnesota, expressing doubts and suggesting that a lot of Americans would agree with him.
He then asked a fellow Republican if Somali support was crucial for Democrats politically. The response affirmed that yes, it is important. However, Gill raised the issue of whether investigating the fraud would negatively impact the Democratic Party’s standing with the Somali community.
Democratic representatives, including Ranking Member Robert Garcia, disagreed with Gill’s narratives and cautioned against generalizing the Somali community in relation to the fraud incidents. Garcia emphasized the need for accountability for fraud without vilifying the entire community, as many innocent individuals rely on necessary services.
Meanwhile, House Republican Leader Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) has called for the deportation of a Somali individual connected to the fraud operation in Minnesota. These discussions are taking shape alongside a recent proposal by Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) for legislation addressing refugees from certain countries, including Somalia.
