Nick Reiner Faces Murder Charges in Court

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — In a surprising turn, Nick Reiner, son of famed filmmaker Rob Reiner, appeared in court on Wednesday. He smiled as his prominent attorney, Alan Jackson, stepped down and his public defender took over his legal representation.

The 32-year-old appeared at the Los Angeles Superior Court for his arraignment on two first-degree murder charges before Judge Teresa McGonigle.

During the court proceedings, Nick was seen with a group of lawyers, including the well-known Jackson.

In a previous court appearance last month, he had to wear a blue suicide vest, though he’s no longer under suicide watch.

Rob, 78, and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner, 70, had recently attended a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien with Nick. Reports indicate that following the event, a heated argument erupted over Nick’s substance use. Friends said he had relapsed and resisted returning to rehab, which heightened tensions at the gathering.

Just hours later, Nick was charged with murder after being arrested not far from his family home, where he lived in a guest house.

He allegedly committed the brutal act of cutting his parents’ throats at their Brentwood residence.

A report from The New York Times revealed that Nick’s sister, Romy, had sent a masseuse to the house. When there was no answer, she decided to check in and discovered her parents’ bodies.

Los Angeles police records show they were called to the Reiner home multiple times over the years, addressing concerns related to welfare and family violence.

As for the legal proceedings, prosecutors have yet to disclose whether they will seek the death penalty. It’s worth noting that California Governor Gavin Newsom implemented a moratorium on the death penalty in 2019, leaving it uncertain what will occur after he completes his term in January 2027.
