Minnesota’s junior senator announced her resignation on Wednesday following a shooting involving ICE in south Minneapolis that reportedly resulted in a woman’s death.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the incident occurred around noon, stating that agents were executing a targeted immigration operation when a “riot” broke out. According to their statement, one person claimed that a vehicle was used by the mob in an attempt to injure an officer, labeling the event as “domestic terrorism.”
In light of the shooting, Democratic Senator Tina Smith expressed her outrage on social media, indicating that an American “appears to have been shot.”
“We are gathering information, but the situation on the ground is unstable,” she noted before revealing her proposal.
Smith has previously criticized government agencies, especially during December’s Operation Metro Surge, claiming it jeopardized public safety and the rule of law.
“There’s no essential cooperation or trust between federal and local authorities, and a complete lack of transparency from the Trump administration regarding ICE’s actions in the Twin Cities,” she remarked at the time, accusing the agency of “kidnapping” citizens and calling President Trump out for inciting “fear and violence.”
When ICE investigated allegations of daycare fraud connected to the Somali community, Smith reacted strongly against Trump’s comments referring to the community as “trash.” She encouraged Minnesotans of Somali heritage to “know their rights, keep their documents handy, and consult an immigration attorney for any specific questions,” as stated in a public announcement.
