Béla Fleck Cancels Kennedy Center Performances

Grammy-winning banjo artist Béla Fleck has decided to cancel three upcoming performances at the Kennedy Center, expressing concerns that the venue has turned into a “pay-to-play and political” platform since the Trump administration’s recent changes. Fleck, who has earned numerous Grammy Awards—more than a dozen, in fact—made the announcement via social media.

In a post on X, he stated, “I have declined a scheduled performance with the NSO at the Kennedy Center. Performances there at an institution that should be focused on music have become paid and political.”

He added that he looks forward to collaborating with the National Symphony Orchestra in the future when they can truly celebrate the arts together.

In December, the White House revealed that President Trump would have his name added to the performing arts organization after a board vote. This move led to several performers, including composer Stephen Schwartz, known for Broadway hits like “Wicked” and “Godspell,” to also cancel their appearances.

The Kennedy Center mentioned that Fleck’s exit was due to “personal issues,” affirming that he would still perform with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Kennedy Center Vice President of Public Affairs, Roman Daravi, commented on the situation, saying, “The artists who canceled performances at the Trump Kennedy Center made a political choice to align themselves with a hateful, politically-driven media campaign, and they earned headlines for doing so. These partisan performers are a minority. There are many artists who want to perform, and they do not intend to discriminate or exclude patrons of different backgrounds or beliefs.”

Fleck’s decision drew a response from Kennedy Center director Richard Grenell, who claimed that the renowned banjo player gave in to what he termed a “woke mob.” He accused Fleck of succumbing to pressures that would limit performances to left-leaning audiences.

“You just gave in to a woke mob that wants you to be political and play only for the left. This mob that is pressuring you will never be happy until you play only for the Democratic Party,” Grenell stated in a repost of Fleck’s initial message.

Grenell emphasized that the Trump Kennedy Center aims to welcome everyone, regardless of their political affiliations. He is on the lookout for performers who want to entertain, rather than engage in political discourse.

Responses to Grenell’s comments flooded in online. Political activist Raheem Kassam remarked, “Art is meaningless without courage,” labeling Fleck’s decision as cowardly. Longtime fan and radio host Mark Davis also criticized Fleck, suggesting that he was the one politicizing the venue.

Davis expressed his thoughts on X, saying, “From a long-time fan: You are politicizing the venue with your tantrums that rob attendees and employees of their talent. You should perform according to your contract and vent your frustrations from the stage if you wish.”

Notably, Trump had fired the Kennedy Center’s leadership back in February 2025 and appointed himself as its director.
