Béla Fleck faces backlash for giving in to 'woke mob' after cancellation of Trump-Kennedy Center event

Béla Fleck Cancels Performances Over Political Issues

Grammy-winning banjo player Béla Fleck has decided to cancel three performances with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. He claims that recent changes under the Trump administration have turned the venue into a “pay-to-play and political” environment.

Fleck, who has over a dozen Grammy Awards to his name, shared the news via social media. In his post on X, he expressed that he had opted out of the scheduled performance, stating, “Performances there, in an institution that should be focused on music, have become paid and political.”

He added, “I look forward to working with NSO in the future when we can share and celebrate the arts together.”

This decision comes after the White House announced in December that Trump’s name would be added to the performing arts organization’s identity, following a board vote. Shortly after this announcement, other performers, including composer Stephen Schwartz of “Wicked” and “Godspell,” also canceled their upcoming appearances.

Interestingly, the Kennedy Center’s official explanation for Fleck’s cancellation attributed it to “personal issues,” while performances with the National Symphony Orchestra would proceed as planned.

Roman Daravi, Kennedy Center’s Vice President of Public Affairs, stated that the artists canceling shows made a political decision aligned with what he described as a “hateful, politically-driven media campaign.” He insisted that these “partisan performers” were in the minority, emphasizing that many artists still want to perform without discrimination based on differing backgrounds or beliefs.

Kennedy Center Director Richard Grenell criticized Fleck, suggesting he had yielded to a “woke mob.” Grenell’s repost of Fleck’s statement included comments about playing only for the left, claiming that the pressure would continue until Fleck exclusively entertained those aligned with the Democratic Party.

Grenell’s remarks prompted various reactions online, one being from political activist Raheem Kassam, who said, “Art is meaningless without courage,” labeling Fleck’s cancellation as “cowardly.”

Radio host Mark Davis, a longtime fan of Fleck, also weighed in, accusing him of politicizing the venue by canceling his performance. He remarked, “From a long-time fan: You are politicizing the venue with your tantrums that rob attendees and employees of their talent,” suggesting that Fleck should perform as per his contract and express his frustrations from the stage.

It’s worth noting that Trump removed Kennedy Center’s leadership in February 2025 and placed himself in a directorial role.
