Police Dog Shot During Standoff in California

Heartbreaking body camera footage reveals the tragic moment when a police dog named Spike was shot by a gang member during a lengthy standoff in California.

Spike, part of the Burbank Police Department K-9 unit, was deployed into a thick area of grass along the interstate after officers attempted to stop Jose Domingo Ayala Alas, 37, who is believed to be affiliated with the 18th Street Gang, on November 22. Footage from the incident was released this week.

Amid the tense situation, gunfire erupted, and the video captures Spike returning to his handlers, severely injured.

A coordinated search followed, involving police dogs and a helicopter. Burbank Police reported that during the search, Spike located the suspect who then opened fire, hitting the dog before fleeing on foot.

Spike was rushed to a nearby veterinary clinic but unfortunately could not be saved, according to police officials.

The traffic stop that led to this incident occurred near Interstate 5 around 6:40 p.m. Both the driver and Alas claimed they had no identification. As officers asked them to exit the vehicle, Alas fled and concealed himself in the dense brush nearby.

Despite attempts to negotiate his surrender, Alas continued to fire shots at police, delaying resolution for several hours.

Following the escalation, SWAT vehicles arrived on the scene. Tragically, when Alas refused to turn himself in and fired at the police with a 9mm handgun shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers returned fire, resulting in his death.

Authorities noted that Alas had a criminal history, which included firearm-related charges, and had entered the U.S. illegally in 2010 after a prior deportation. An investigation into the shooting and the standoff is currently in progress.
