Cyanide Murder in Nassau County

A case in Nassau County, Long Island has taken a shocking turn, as prosecutors allege that 53-year-old Asif Qureshi ambushed his estranged wife, Alina Asif, using a deadly cyanide mixture. According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on October 17, shortly after Alina left to take their children to school. Qureshi reportedly waited for her return, then suffocated her with a cloth soaked in cyanide and sulfuric acid.

“This is one of the most horrific cases I have ever seen in my 36 years as a prosecutor,” Nassau Prosecutor Anne Donnelly remarked. She added that Qureshi’s actions were deliberate, noting he chose to strike when Alina was alone, after the children were out.

Donnelly described the method of murder as particularly gruesome, stating, “He poisoned her with cyanide. It’s a very gruesome way to die… basically, he burned her lungs.”

There were also observations of sulfuric acid burns on Qureshi’s face, leading to speculation that he might have utilized that substance as well.

Qureshi, who is unemployed and worked as a software engineer, allegedly left Alina’s body for their children to discover. The day unfolded around 7 a.m. when their 18-year-old daughter left home for college.

By 7:53 a.m., Alina, 46, took her 7-year-old daughter to drop off her 14-year-old son at school. At this time, Qureshi entered their home, lying in wait for her return. Alina came back around 8 a.m. with her younger child, completely unaware of his presence.

After dropping off their daughter at approximately 9 a.m., Alina was not seen alive again. It’s noted that Qureshi was seen leaving their home at around 10:50 a.m., carrying a duffel bag before riding away on a scooter.

Later that day, their eldest daughter received a concerning call about their mother not picking up her sister. When police arrived at the home, they found Alina in a disturbing state, face down on the bed with burns around her mouth.

Surveillance footage helped identify Qureshi at the scene, leading to his arrest on October 23. He now faces charges of murder and robbery and is being held without bail, with a court appearance scheduled for February 18.

His attorney, Stanley Rubin, did not comment on the specifics of the case outside court but emphasized the importance of a fair trial. “He will not be tried on the sidewalk,” Rubin stated, reinforcing the principle of presumed innocence.
