Attack on Honduran Deputy During Congress
Gladys Aurora López Calderon, a deputy for the National Party in Honduras, suffered serious injuries when a grenade detonated near her during a session of the National Congress on Thursday, according to multiple news outlets.
While she was being interviewed, an explosive device apparently thrown by far-left protestors struck her. Footage shared by HCH TV captured not only the explosion but also objects hurled during the chaos.
Lopez recounted her experience, saying, “I arrived at the emergency room in immense pain. I can’t hear out of one ear. I think the camera caught me being helped out. I need to reach out to human rights organizations for protection.” This statement came shortly after the attack.
Tomás Zambrano, another National Party deputy, asserted that the violent act was orchestrated by far-left demonstrators. He described the scene, stating, “While I was being interviewed with my colleagues about the extraordinary session of the National Diet, a mortar bomb was thrown at me.” According to him, Luis Rolando Redondo Guifarro, the president of the National Assembly, claimed responsibility for the incident.
Zambrano further commented, “These acts of violence have been occurring against us for four years. The rebels cannot keep abusing their power.” Redondo condemned the attack, announcing his immediate actions to analyze surveillance footage and recordings from the 911 system to pinpoint the attackers.
In related news, last December, business leader Nasry Asfura, the National Party’s candidate backed by then-President Donald Trump, narrowly lost the presidential election to Salvador Nasrallah of the Liberal Party, trailing by about 26,000 votes.
