Claire Valdez Announces Congressional Run

New York State Congresswoman Claire Valdez, a supporter of Mayor Zoran Mamdani, is gearing up for a bid for the U.S. House of Representatives.

She describes herself as “a union organizer, a lawmaker, and a democratic socialist.” Her journey into politics stemmed from her experiences in low-wage jobs and the labor movement. Valdez emphasizes that she aims to confront challenges like oligarchy, fascism, and war, advocating for the rights of working people.

In her political stance, Valdez has called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), labeling it a “militarized terrorist organization” that is harming the nation.

Her campaign site outlines her support for “Medicare for All,” suggesting that it’s essential to tax billionaires and corporations to fund universal health coverage.

Valdez also passionately advocates for housing rights, asserting that access to safe and affordable housing is a necessity rather than a commodity. “Housing is a human right,” she insists, criticizing Congress for prioritizing landlords over the needs of working individuals.

As she campaigns, Valdez will face others, including Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, in the Democratic primary this coming June. Reynoso has already expressed his intention to run for the House seat that current Representative Nydia Velazquez will vacate, as she has opted not to seek re-election in 2026.
