Father Arrested for Shooting Outside School
A father in Michigan has been accused of firing a gun outside his son’s middle school after being denied entry, leading to a school lockdown. The incident took place earlier this week in Romulus, located about half an hour from Detroit.
According to local police, 44-year-old Shawntez Marshawn Gregory visited Romulus Middle School shortly before 10 a.m. on a Tuesday. He demanded over the intercom, “I’m here to get my son. I want him now!”
The school secretary recognized Gregory as someone banned from the premises due to past erratic behavior, which included previous incidents of agitation while armed. Consequently, the secretary called 911, and the school went into lockdown. After that, several gunshots were heard, prompting the secretary to drop to the floor while informing authorities that Gregory was trying to “shoot the lock” to get in.
When the police arrived, they arrested Gregory and found a gun with seven spent rounds at the scene. Wayne County Prosecutor Kim Worthy charged him with several felonies. These charges included making false reports, issuing terroristic threats, and the unlawful possession of a firearm on school property. While Gregory fired seven shots close to the building, he did not direct any shots into the school itself.
“This incident is every parent’s nightmare,” stated Worthy in the media. Fortunately, no injuries occurred during this alarming episode.
Further details revealed that the secretary had identified Gregory prior to the shooting, noting he was under a restraining order preventing him from accessing the school or his son.
Gregory was arraigned at the 34th District Court on a Thursday. During the hearing, he allegedly used profanity towards the judge, suggested she find a real job, and refused to engage with her inquiries. When asked to introduce himself, Gregory simply replied, “No, bye.”
While the bond was discussed, Gregory expressed his disdain for the proceedings and made comments perceived as racially charged. He was subsequently ordered to be held without bail.
As of Friday, Gregory remains in the Wayne County Jail, with his next court appearance set for January 20.
