Washington National Opera leaves Trump-Kennedy Center due to financial difficulties

The Washington National Opera announced on Friday its intention to sever ties with the Trump Kennedy Center, following a series of notable departures since the Trump administration took over the center.

This administration’s bid for control over the newly renamed Trump Kennedy Center has met resistance from some artists, who argue that the shift is subjecting a cultural institution to political influences. However, reports suggest that the resignation stemmed more from financial issues than ideological conflicts.

The Washington National Opera (WNO), which has had a presence at the center since 1971, released a statement saying, “Today, the Washington National Opera announced its decision to seek an early amicable termination of its affiliation with the Kennedy Center and resume operations as a fully independent nonprofit organization.”

Roma Dalavi, the Trump Kennedy Center’s vice president of communications, elaborated that the decision was not based on a political agenda but rather on ongoing financial strains that predated Trump’s presidency. She stated, “Our relationship with WNO, influenced by politically appointed board members, has faced financial challenges for over a decade. Financial problems have been a lingering issue long before current leadership came into play. If financial commitments aren’t consistently met, we have to make difficult choices for the center’s well-being.”

Dalavi continued, “There are renowned operas in the U.S. and Asia that haven’t been accessible due to WNO’s exclusive rights. Our audiences will now have more opportunities to enjoy world-class opera at the Trump Kennedy Center.”

Another spokesperson from the Trump Kennedy Center expressed that parting ways with WNO was a tough decision rooted in financial difficulties and believed it to be the best course for both organizations. They claimed this would help ensure the center’s long-term viability.

Additionally, a board member from the Washington National Opera noted that there was an internal disagreement regarding the decision to leave, leading to some board members opting to resign.
