Mayor Vows to Empower Citizens but Meets with Spielberg

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who promised to “return power to the people” after his inauguration, found himself making headlines shortly after taking office. Reports emerged of a private meeting between him and renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

The New York Times revealed that Mamdani visited Spielberg at his apartment on Central Park West. Interestingly, this meeting wasn’t listed on Mamdani’s official schedule. However, it was later confirmed by Spielberg’s spokesperson and city officials.

Mamdani, identifying as a democratic socialist, has expressed a desire to reduce the power of the wealthy and focus on the needs of ordinary New Yorkers.

Critics had suggested that his election might drive affluent individuals out of the city, yet on the very day of his swearing-in, Spielberg—a billionaire—registered as a resident of New York City, according to sources.

“We are accountable to all New Yorkers, not to billionaires and oligarchs who believe they can purchase our democracy,” Mamdani stated on New Year’s Day after being sworn in by Senator Bernie Sanders.

Spielberg is celebrated for his iconic films like Jaws, E.T., and Saving Private Ryan, and he’s been a long-time supporter of the Democratic Party. Reports indicate that the meeting between Mamdani and Spielberg lasted about an hour, had no fixed agenda, and was not open to the public.

His predecessor, former Mayor Eric Adams, faced significant criticism for his nightlife choices, including frequenting nightclubs and restaurants. When asked about Adams’ behavior, Mamdani suggested that he wouldn’t frequent the same venues and instead, plans to connect with everyday workers like nurses and paramedics during nighttime hours.

Although NYC mayors are known to meet with celebrities, Mamdani’s private gathering sparked interest, as he had often been characterized as an outsider during his campaign.
