DSA leaders present Venezuela as a socialist paradise to young Americans, overlooking Maduro's human rights violations.

This week, Mayor Mamdani’s Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) allies praised Venezuela as a model socialist society, despite the ongoing issues of poverty, violence, and drug trafficking under President Nicolás Maduro’s rule.

In a video conference attended by about 1,400 people, he proclaimed, “Keep your hands off Venezuela!” Officials described a nation where living conditions are lovely, housing is affordable, and the only challenge citizens face comes from American interference.

They conveniently skipped over the fact that, since 2021, Maduro has hosted DSA leaders in Venezuela multiple times, treating them to lavish experiences that paint a positive picture of his regime.

During a lengthy presentation, party members avoided discussing the upcoming elections or the alarming number of politically motivated arrests and extrajudicial killings under Maduro since he assumed office in 2013.

Tristan Babor-Marquez, a DSA leader, noted, “There is a lot of misinformation about Venezuela” while giving his take on the country’s narrative, conveniently neglecting to mention Maduro’s actions until probing deeper into history.

He echoed claims from Maduro’s government about a significant number of affordable homes supposedly constructed through the Gran Misión Vivienda initiative, which, according to reports, are often subpar and lack essential services.

Venezuelan human rights advocates argue that the bulk of housing initiatives are not actualized and that funds reportedly end up benefiting Maduro’s associates.

Diego Visentini, a filmmaker whose family fled Venezuela, underscored that much of the promised infrastructure remains unrealized, revealing a kleptocratic system in place.

DSA leaders also cited the existence of “socialist communes” as a sign of Venezuela’s commitment to socialism, attributing the extensive poverty—affecting approximately 90% of the population—to U.S. sanctions, which began during the Obama administration.

During the meeting, the DSA urged participants to write to members of Congress regarding Maduro’s detention, having already submitted a significant number of letters.

State Senator Jabari Brisport, a DSA member, criticized the Trump administration and labeled Maduro’s situation as unjust, advocating for his return to Venezuela while dismissing the authoritarian nature of Maduro’s government.

Concerns regarding Maduro’s engagements with the DSA were apparent, particularly as meetings with DSA representatives yielded positive portrayals of him on Venezuelan national television.

“The person I met is not a dictator,” stated Austin Gonzalez from DSA, during a passionate discussion, asserting he met someone genuinely concerned for his people.

DSA representatives maintained a luxurious stay during their visits to Caracas, showcasing the beautiful scenery, while the reality for many Venezuelans remains dire.

Moreover, the group has already planned future trips, including one aimed at observing the 2024 elections, which have been labeled illegal by various American officials.

Here are the latest updates on Nicolas Maduro:

The DSA previously claimed that Maduro’s leadership is bolstered by strong support from Venezuela’s communal networks, referring to upcoming elections as “free and fair.”

Visentini expressed discontent with socialists for ignoring the humanitarian crisis affecting Venezuela, highlighting the substantial suffering, economic turmoil, and repressive tactics witnessed in the country.

Following his recent arrest on charges including drug trafficking, Maduro appeared in a Manhattan court, asserting his innocence while presently held at a detention center in Brooklyn.
