Detroit Schools to Reward Perfect Attendance

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is marking the second year of its incentive program by offering students cash rewards for perfect attendance. This initiative aims to motivate students to attend school without fail.

In a press release from December 4, the district announced its plan. “We’re excited to reinstate our successful perfect attendance award for the winter 2026 semester,” it stated.

Commencing January 5, 2026, students in DPSCD high schools can earn a $100 gift card for each week they maintain perfect attendance. This accumulates to a maximum of $1,000 over the duration of the program.

Chronic absenteeism has been a pressing issue for Detroit public schools, with a reported 60.9% attendance rate during the 2024-2025 academic year.

The district explained that the purpose of the “Perfect Attendance Allowance” program is to encourage students to attend school regularly, especially in winter when attendance tends to drop. The program is scheduled to run from January 5 to March 20.

Research shows that consistent attendance significantly boosts academic success. Students who miss fewer than 18 days a year are often three to five times more likely to perform at or exceed grade level and be college-ready. “This award system is designed to keep students engaged during the winter months when attendance is typically lower, but academic progress is vital,” the district added.

Statistics indicate that over 50% of students in Detroit frequently miss classes, according to the director of the Detroit Education Equity and Research Partnership, which examined the issue of chronic absenteeism across Michigan. More than half of the students in the area are affected.

Sarah Lenhoff from Wayne State University’s Detroit Partnership for Educational Equity and Research defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% or more of school days. For instance, a student missing 18 or more days in a school year is categorized as chronically absent.

The district has produced a flyer that outlines the “perfect attendance allowance.” Eligibility will be assessed weekly, and students can earn $100 in gift cards each week they achieve perfect attendance.

The district’s message emphasizes the importance of attendance. “Students are significantly more likely to excel academically if they miss less than 18 school days each year. Families play a vital role—support your students and help them access available resources to ensure steady attendance,” the message shared on their Facebook page noted.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools nationwide have faced challenges in re-engaging students in classroom learning, prompting various initiatives to encourage attendance.
