Clashes Erupt in Tehran Amid Ongoing Protests
On Friday, armed protesters clashed with security forces near Tehran, as anti-regime demonstrations surged across Iran, entering their second week. The tensions have been palpable, with gunfire heard in cellphone footage that surfaced on Iranian television and was shared widely.
The chaotic scenes captured people frantically running through the streets, voicing chants like “Death to Khamenei!” and “Death to the dictator!” among others, expressing anger and solidarity against the regime.
The protests, now in their 14th day, have seen a tragic toll: reports indicate that 65 individuals, including children, have been killed and over 2,300 arrested, according to the Iranian Human Rights Defenders News Agency.
This week, the authorities implemented a significant internet blackout, effectively isolating the country further and intensifying threats of harsh measures amidst the discontent.
In Washington, President Trump remarked that the U.S. would take action if Iran escalates its violence against protesters, indicating a watchful approach: “Lock and load,” he stated, suggesting the possibility of a strong response without military intervention.
The protests have expanded to about 190 cities as of Saturday, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction. Opposition figures like Mariam Rajavi have commended the defiance shown by the protesters, underscoring their commitment to oust the government.
As the unrest continues, notable images have emerged from the chaos, including scenes of a burning vehicle during protests in Zanjan.
President Trump observed that Iran appears to be facing substantial challenges, with certain cities experiencing shifts in control that seemed unlikely a short while ago. “We’re monitoring the situation closely,” he noted, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation at hand.
