How authorities identified surgeon Michael McKee as the suspect in the murders of an Ohio dentist and his wife

A surgeon suspected of murder in connection with the deaths of Ohio dentist Spencer Tepe and his wife Monique was identified after police tracked his vehicle using surveillance footage close to the couple’s residence, according to court records.

Michael David McKee, a 39-year-old doctor from Chicago, was taken into custody for allegedly killing his ex-wife Monique, 39, and her husband, Spencer, 37, in the affluent Weinland Park area of Columbus, Ohio.

Interestingly, it was McKee’s car that led authorities to him. Court documents indicate it was spotted near the murder scene on December 30, the night the crime occurred, which was quite a distance from his home—around 325 miles away.

Detectives noted that McKee’s vehicle “arrived just before the murder and left shortly after,” and it was later located near his workplace in Rockford, Illinois.

Evidence linked McKee to the car, which had them considering him as a suspect in the case involving Monique’s previous relationship.

McKee and Tepe were married from 2015 until 2017, a divorce reportedly filed amicably. At the time, he was living in Virginia, and they did not have any children.

The motive behind these tragic events remains unclear.

McKee was arrested on Saturday and charged with two counts of murder shortly after a warrant was issued for his arrest, as per court documents.

His arrest took place just before noon, according to reports from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Plans for his extradition to Columbus are underway, with a court hearing set for Monday.

Spencer and Monique Tepe were found dead after Spencer’s co-worker, concerned over his absence from work, checked on him, having tried to reach out for three hours. A further check by a friend revealed that a one-year-old and a four-year-old were crying inside their home.

Upon the police’s arrival, they discovered Spencer dead from gunshot wounds, with no evidence of forced entry.

A week later, Columbus police shared surveillance footage of a hooded figure seen walking in an alley near the couple’s home around the time of the murders. It’s uncertain if this figure is connected to McKee.
