Suspect Arrested After Arson at Mississippi Synagogue

A suspect was taken into custody on Saturday following a fire that is believed to be an arson attack at Congregation Beth Israel, the largest synagogue in Mississippi. The incident, which occurred just after 3 a.m. in Jackson, resulted in the destruction of a Torah but fortunately did not injure any worshippers, according to officials.

Images from the scene reveal significant damage to both the synagogue’s administrative offices and its library. Several Torah scrolls were either damaged or destroyed in the fire.

Jackson Mayor John Horn confirmed that the arrest was made as part of an investigation involving both the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Mayor Horn emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating, “Acts of anti-Semitism, racism, and religious hatred are attacks on all of Jackson and will be treated as acts of terrorism against the safety and freedom of worship of our residents.”

Details about the suspect, including their name and specific charges, have not been released at this time.

Congregation Beth Israel holds historical significance, having previously been targeted in a Ku Klux Klan bombing back in 1967 due to its involvement in civil rights issues, as noted by the Southern Institute for Jewish Life, which shares the building.

The institute expressed its support for the community, stating, “As Jackson’s only synagogue, Beth Israel is a beloved institution, and it is the fellowship of our neighbors and broader community that will see us through to the end.”

The American Jewish Committee expressed outrage over the attack, citing it as a reflection of the troubling rise of anti-Semitism, both domestically and globally.

Meanwhile, Synagogue President Zach Shemper mentioned that the congregation is currently assessing the damage and receiving support from neighboring houses of worship. He also confirmed that services will be suspended indefinitely.

Remarkably, one Torah that survived the Holocaust was unharmed in the fire.
