Travel Tips from a Cruise Expert

A regular cruise traveler, Molly Finlon, has shared insights that could greatly enhance the cabin experience for cruise-goers. At 38, and from Seattle, her unique perspective comes from her husband’s work as a marine engineer, which allows her to cruise at little to no cost aside from covering daily expenses like food and lodging. She also takes on a role as a guest presenter on luxurious cruise liners several months each year.

Finlon’s experiences at sea have given her valuable knowledge about maximizing the onboard experience, starting right at the booking stage. Her top piece of advice? It’s wise to book your next cruise while still on your current one.

“When you’re making an onboard reservation with a Future Cruise Consultant, they can provide fantastic info and maybe even help you land a better cabin,” she explained. She also suggests meeting face-to-face with a cruise consultant and doing your research into the specific cruise line before committing.

Amenities, layouts, and overall experiences can vary significantly from one cruise company to another, she pointed out. “Each cruise line has its own quirks, so I’d recommend checking out YouTube videos, reading articles, or scrolling through social media to find what fits your taste,” Finlon advised.

Many travelers, she found, often book cruises without fully understanding the particular cruise company or what it entails. This lack of knowledge can lead to unexpected surprises.

Finlon’s views are influenced by her career in the cruise industry, and she has encountered numerous challenges along the way. But she recognizes the upside too—it’s a unique lifestyle. “There are no typical holidays; it’s like a daily job aboard the ship,” she noted. Since starting in 2011, she’s traveled to over 100 countries, relishing the opportunity to explore new places and meet diverse people daily.

“Every day offers something new to see or do,” she added, reflecting on the perks of her unconventional work life. Amidst all this, there’s always a chance to experience adventure and connection on the high seas.
