X Introduces ‘Smart Cashtags’ to Connect Crypto and Stock Tickers to Current Prices

Simply put

  • The new feature, dubbed Smart Cashtags, lets users tag specific stocks and cryptocurrencies when they post symbols like $BTC or $NVDA.
  • When users tap on a tagged asset, they can access an in-app page displaying live prices, charts, and relevant posts, which aims to clarify any confusion from overlapping tickers.
  • Company X plans to gather user feedback before the public launch scheduled for next month, though details about transactions or payments are still unclear.

Elon Musk’s X app is working on a feature called Smart Cashtags that connects ticker symbols in posts to real-time financial information.

According to recent reports, this feature will allow users to specify particular assets, like stocks or cryptocurrencies, when they use cash tags such as $BTC or $NVDA. Nikita Beer, the head of product at the company, mentioned this.

By tapping the Smart Cashtag, users will see an in-app page with live prices, price changes, charts, and other posts about the asset.

Mr. X noted that the tool aims to clear up any confusion regarding tickers and smart contracts, particularly in the cryptocurrency space where symbols can have multiple meanings. Sometimes, assets are identified by their smart contract address.

Beer mentioned that X intends to collect user input ahead of a general release next month, but there was no confirmation about including trading or monetization features.

This initiative highlights Company X’s broader strategy to establish the platform as a reliable source for up-to-the-minute financial data, as discussions about markets and trading continue to grow among users.

Musk has expressed his vision for X to become an “app for everything,” encompassing payments and financial services, and he has previously hinted at incorporating cryptocurrencies like his favored Dogecoin into future payment options.

Former CEO Linda Yaccarino also revealed in June the intention to offer in-app investing and trading before her resignation the following month.

No specific updates on the timeline for this feature’s launch have been announced, and Company X has yet to respond to requests for comments.

Mr. Bier joined X around the time of Mr. Yaccarino’s departure and serves as an advisor to Mr. Solana, in addition to working as a venture partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners. He previously held roles at xAI and Meta, where he focused on developing consumer apps.
