Officials look into death threat against JD Vance made by host of college-sponsored radio program

Exclusive: A volunteer radio show host has stepped down after it was confirmed that authorities were aware of a post on the left-leaning social media platform Blue Sky, where someone claimed to want to kill Vice President J.D. Vance.

The post, attributed to a user named hanslopez.bsky.social, stated, “It’s simple. We’re going to kill J.D. Vance,” in response to a comment that suggested Vance may not be a friend of Britain and France. This user identified himself as a host for a WUML radio show, linked to the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

The WUML website mentions that for over six decades, it has “given voice to both the Lowell College student body and the greater Lowell community.”

WUML is a nonprofit FM station stemming from Lowell, Massachusetts, funded by the university and entirely managed by its students, providing broadcasts both over the air and online.

After learning of the Blue Sky post, the university reached out to local authorities. A statement revealed that the Lowell Police Department quickly coordinated with the FBI, Secret Service, and Haverhill Police Department that same day for an appropriate response.

The school said, “The individual in question has been contacted, and the necessary assessment has been undertaken alongside our federal partners. Officials have concluded that there is no immediate threat.”

The Secret Service confirmed awareness of the situation, while the Haverhill Police Department directed inquiries to the FBI, which chose not to comment.

In a statement, the college emphasized that it takes any threats of violence seriously. Remarks like those made in the post do not align with the principles of democracy and the college’s core values. The individual involved has resigned from their volunteer position with WUML and removed the problematic posts from their Blue Sky account.

It was later disclosed that the person behind the violent comments was an alumnus of the institution. Multiple posts, including one aimed directly at Vance, were deleted from the Blue Sky account.
