Good News for Marcus Freeman
Marcus Freeman received some reassuring news on Monday. The head coach of the University of Notre Dame will not face any assault charges following an incident involving his son, Vinny, at a high school wrestling tournament in Indiana, according to the St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office.
Chris Freeger, the new assistant coach at Prairie, reported that Freeman “had his back with both hands” and mentioned to the police that he recognized Freeman and perceived him as “rich,” implying he might seek legal representation.
Witness accounts, which include testimony from an off-duty police officer, present a starkly different picture of the situation. They described the contact as merely a “nudge or brush” rather than anything forceful. This claim aligns with video evidence showing Freeman and Flieger interacting briefly as Freeman exited the gymnasium.
Prosecutor Kenneth P. Cotter stated, “While Mr. Freeman’s right arm is not fully visible in the video, his left hand is shown to remain in his pocket during Plaintiff’s interaction with Mr. Freeman. Plaintiff’s and Mr. Freeman’s head and body movements do not support the assumption that violent physical contact occurred.”
Freeman admitted to having a discussion with Flieger, asking him to “stop talking about my son to other wrestlers.” Flieger had expressed anger towards the Freeman family, allegedly urging other wrestlers to target Freeman’s son.
Surveillance footage showed the incident occurred at the gym exit. The police interviewed several witnesses and ultimately referred the case to the prosecutor’s office. After reviewing the Mishawaka Police Department’s findings, it was concluded that no criminal violence took place, leading to no charges against Freeman.
The prosecutor’s office usually refrains from commenting on cases with no charges filed. However, given the media attention surrounding the allegation, they deemed it appropriate to release the investigation’s outcomes.
This incident adds to what’s been a pretty eventful offseason for Freeman. Despite securing a 10-2 finish, his name was overlooked by the College Football Playoff Committee. With the NFL coaching carousel ongoing, he has reaffirmed his commitment to continue as coach for the 2026 season at Notre Dame.
