Iran’s Threats to U.S. Leadership
Iran has issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump, with Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Berger Ghalibaf declaring that the U.S. leader is “paranoid” and “arrogant.” In a speech aired on state media, Ghalibaf threatened to teach Trump “a lesson he will never forget,” emphasizing that U.S. forces would face severe consequences, described as being “scorched by Iranian garrison fire.”
His comments were some of the most aggressive yet, referencing the late General Qassem Soleimani, known for his terrorist activities, and promising to bring catastrophic destruction to American leadership. Ghalibaf directly challenged Trump, stating, “Come and be burned by the fire of Iranian defense forces,” and reiterated, “We are your enemies,” representing the sentiments of many Iranians.
His statements, filled with religious fervor, illustrate the regime’s tendency to utilize martyrdom as a way to frame their ongoing conflicts. “We are the people of Imam Hussein. We are waiting. We are standing towards you,” he proclaimed, aiming to rally nationalist sentiment among his audience.
In a context of escalating threats from Trump against American military sites, Ghalibaf further warned, “Come and see how all capabilities in this region will be destroyed,” and advised the U.S. to “understand that if this area is set on fire, you will be facing overwhelming firepower.”
The speech also hinted at internal struggles within Iran, as Ghalibaf addressed unrest and instability while asserting that Iranians would defend the regime against foreign threats. He contended, “Delusive Trump, don’t believe the lies you tell yourself,” stressing that Iran would not tolerate any violence against its people or leaders.
Ghalibaf, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and a firm supporter of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, has been vocal in conveying the hardliners’ perspective within the Iranian political landscape. This echoing of past aggressive rhetoric towards the U.S. occurs in tandem with Iran’s increasing military ties with Russia and its partnerships with regional proxies.
This uptick in threatening rhetoric from Iranian officials comes amid rising domestic unrest, characterized by significant protests against the regime driven by economic struggles and political repression. Iranian authorities have reportedly restricted internet services in various provinces as part of efforts to quell these demonstrations, which have resulted in growing casualties and severe law enforcement actions against protesters.
Following an Iranian senior official labeling Trump as a “barbaric yellow dog” who must “pay a price,” discussions on potential violent retaliatory actions gained momentum, with justifications rooted in legal and religious grounds for such measures. Meanwhile, Trump has publicly expressed his support for the Iranian protesters, calling attention to the regime’s oppressive actions while announcing that the U.S. is monitoring the situation closely.
On Sunday, Trump responded firmly to the escalating threats from Iran, indicating that military options are being evaluated. He conveyed to reporters, “If they do that, we will attack them at a level that we have never had before.” In a separate pro-regime demonstration, Iran’s Ali Larijani dismissed Trump’s warnings, suggesting that his remarks shouldn’t be taken seriously and underscoring the preparedness of the Iranian people for a confrontation with the U.S. and Israel.
