Bear Takes Up Residence Under Home in Altadena
In yet another peculiar case, a homeowner in Los Angeles County finds himself in a tight spot after a large bear has decided to make itself at home beneath his house.
This incident occurred mere days after a 550-pound black bear was removed from a nearby residence where it had been living for over a month. The footage of this bear hiding beneath the house was shared, though the homeowner, wishing to remain anonymous, provided the video.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is currently examining the video to see if this recent bear is the same one previously known as “Yellow 2120” or if it might be a different bear altogether.
Ken Johnson, a resident of Altadena, had his life turned upside down around Thanksgiving last year when a bear got trapped in his crawl space.
This bear kept him awake, disrupted his holidays, and caused significant damage to his property. Johnson shared that the bear finally left his home last Thursday, thanks to a group called the Bear League, who employed a unique method of getting rid of the animal by using vegetable oil-filled paintballs.
Interestingly, Johnson expressed skepticism about whether the bear found in the new home was indeed his old housemate, suggesting it simply found another hiding spot nearby.
“I believe it’s the same one. I saw it running off now in that direction,” Johnson commented, noting how the location of the new sighting aligns with where Yellow 2120 was last seen.
The bear now resides in a neighborhood close to the Angeles National Forest, an area frequently visited by bears looking for food and convenient hiding places.
“This region is quite popular with bears,” stated CDFW spokesperson Cort Koppling.
In an attempt to capture Johnson’s bear using a trap filled with sardines and peanut butter, the CDFW inadvertently caught a different bear wandering in the vicinity instead.
Johnson shared some parting advice for homeowners who may find themselves with unexpected animal roommates.
