Simon Holmstrom thriving after reconnecting with Jean-Gabriel Pageau

Holmstrom’s Performance and Pageau’s Influence

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Simon Holmstrom’s surge in performance over the last month can’t be solely credited to playing with Jean-Gabriel Pageau. It’s somewhat misleading, given that they’ve only shared the ice together in six of the last 14 games for the Islanders.

However, the five points Holmstrom has racked up in the last three games, including a crucial goal in Saturday’s 4-3 victory over the Wild, certainly suggests that being teamed with Pageau has had a positive impact.

“I think he definitely elevates the players around him,” Pageau remarked after a practice on Monday. “He and I communicate a lot, often discussing what we could improve after shifts. We generally seem to be aligned, and when we’re not, we talk about it to ensure smoother play later. I don’t think there’s much beyond that.”

Holmstrom appears to thrive alongside Pageau, who also serves as his partner during penalties. Yet, his impressive stats over the past month—like 13 points in 14 games and an impressive goals-against average at 5-on-5—can’t be attributed to that partnership alone.

“He’s really stepped up his game,” Pageau added. “His skating with the puck, his overall confidence, and shooting ability have improved. Plus, his defensive skills, including blocking shots, are top-notch. It’s rare to see him not fully engaged during a game.”

Coach Patrick Roy echoed these sentiments, noting that Holmstrom’s gameplay has become more consistent and assertive. “I appreciate the way he controls the puck and positions himself defensively. Offensively, it’s encouraging to see him shooting with more confidence, which is crucial for any player,” Roy said.

Kyle MacLean will be rejoining the lineup on Tuesday, stepping in for Max Tsyplakov on the fourth line with Casey Cizikas and Mark Gacom.

“They’re starting to establish an identity,” Roy observed. “Sippy had a good showing in the last game. We’re focusing on involving everyone, which seems essential since we’re performing so well.”

Additionally, Ilya Sorokin will be taking his place in goal for the upcoming game against the Jets.
