German Chancellor Predicts End of Iranian Regime

In a striking statement on Tuesday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested that the oppressive Iranian government might be nearing its “last days and weeks.” This comes in the wake of disturbing footage showing thousands killed during a brutal crackdown in Tehran.

“A regime that can only hold power through force is, well, basically finished,” Merz remarked to reporters while visiting India. “I truly believe we’re witnessing the end of this regime.” He emphasized that there’s “no legitimacy from popular elections” since the public is now revolting against those in power.

At 70 years old, Merz stands out as the first global leader to openly predict the imminent downfall of Iran’s Shiite theocracy, which has been in control since the overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1979.

Protests erupted across Iran on December 28, triggered by rising inflation, a weak currency, and skyrocketing food prices. Officials in Iran have reported that around 2,000 protesters have been killed, with other sources suggesting the actual number could be higher.

Reports indicate that over 10,700 individuals have been detained by the authorities, according to a U.S.-based news agency. Some activists claim the regime may have targeted civilians merely present during the unrest.

The ongoing protests are the most significant seen in Iran since at least 2022, surpassing uprisings from 1999, 2009, and 2019.

In response to the situation, President Trump threatened on Monday to impose a 25% tariff on goods from nations that continue trading with Iran. He warned on January 2, “If Iran targets peaceful protesters, we will come to their aid.” He further stated, “We’re locked, loaded, and ready to go.”

As tensions rise, Trump is contemplating further actions, mentioning to reporters on Sunday that Iranian leaders “want to negotiate” but stressed that given the current circumstances, they may need to take action soon.

On Capitol Hill, there is a growing bipartisan call among lawmakers for Trump to respond with military action against Iran following its nuclear attack, with officials warning that any attacks could result in serious consequences for the United States.
