Director Judd Apatow asserts that America is 'under a dictatorship' at the Golden Globes

Apatow’s Remarks at Golden Globes Spark Controversy

During the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, director Judd Apatow made headlines with his remarks, stating that America is currently in a “dictatorship.” This comment came as he was presenting the director award and reflecting on the changes since his film *Trainwreck* lost the Golden Globe to Ridley Scott’s *The Martian* back in 2016.

“A lot has happened since then. That was 10 years ago,” Apatow noted. He continued, “Since then, we’ve had coronavirus. I think we’re a dictatorship now. I’m still pretty focused on this ‘Martian’ thing, I have to be honest.”

Apatow’s critiques of President Donald Trump are well-documented. He often employed strong language, even likening his feelings regarding Trump’s election back in 2017 to a traumatic experience. “I feel like I’ve just been raped. I don’t know when they’re going to kill me,” he conveyed at the time.

His comments didn’t stop there; in 2020, he accused Trump of “mass murder” due to his management of the coronavirus crisis, claiming that misinformation led to unnecessary deaths. He stated, “Donald is a mass murderer. Any comment that doesn’t make that clear means he’s lying about what he’s doing.”

At the Golden Globes, Apatow wasn’t alone in addressing political issues. Several stars, including Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, and Ariana Grande, wore pins reading “ICE OUT” or “Be Good.” This was in memory of Renee Good, a woman shot by ICE agents recently.

The ceremony certainly set the stage for political dialogue, and Apatow’s comments, as well as the symbolic gestures from other celebrities, highlight the ongoing tensions in the current political climate.
