Poll Indicates U.S. Support for Intervention in Venezuela
A recent survey reveals that a significant number of Americans, including a remarkable 66% of Hispanic respondents, would back military intervention in Venezuela if they were made aware of the country’s connections to narco-terrorism, Iran, and Hezbollah.
The Morning Consult poll, commissioned by the pro-American Energy Security Committee, surveyed 2,202 individuals between January 10 and 11. Participants were prompted with a statement regarding Venezuela’s alleged status as a hub for terrorism and drug trafficking, leading to questions about their support for U.S. intervention.
According to the results shared with The Post, 60% expressed a likelihood of supporting such an intervention, while 40% indicated otherwise.
Support for intervention was notably high across demographic lines, with 66% of men and Hispanics in favor, alongside 64% of white respondents. However, the poll also highlighted a divide, as 57% of Black respondents opposed the idea, leaving only 43% in support.
In a related development, earlier this month, the U.S. military apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who faces drug trafficking charges, and transported him to New York for trial, insisting on his innocence.
Additionally, the survey found backing for intervention from respondents across various income levels and locations—urban, suburban, and rural alike.
Participants were also asked about their views on Venezuela’s oil capabilities, with a statement regarding the country’s enormous oil reserves but minimal production. Around 45% agreed that U.S. energy companies could enhance oil output in Venezuela, while 37% were indifferent, and 17% opposed this view.
Jennifer Sutton, Executive Director of the CSA, stated that the poll indicates robust support for U.S. involvement in Venezuela, particularly in light of Iran’s entrenchment in the country’s energy sector alongside Hezbollah’s role in illicit drug activities. She remarked that both nations have used their energy resources to facilitate terrorism, suggesting that U.S. expertise could potentially restore Venezuela’s economic stature while strengthening U.S. security.
The CSA also released additional information detailing the formal ties between Iran and Venezuela, stressing the presence of Iranian and Hezbollah terrorist networks operating within the country.
This poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
