Shooting of Renee Good by ICE agent leads to divided opinions in Minnesota polls

Poll Reveals Split Views on ICE Shooting After National Outcry

A week after a video showing the fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minnesota gained widespread attention and sparked protests, a new poll has surfaced, highlighting significant partisan divides regarding the incident’s justification.

According to a Quinnipiac University survey, 53% of registered voters nationwide believe the shooting was not justified, while 35% feel it was. About 12% remained undecided on the issue.

The responses were sharply divided along party lines: 92% of Democrats stated the shooting was unjustified, in contrast to over 75% of Republicans who supported the actions of the officer. Independents weighed in with 59% claiming the shooting was not justified, against 28% who disagreed.

The incident involved 37-year-old Renee Good, who was shot during a federal enforcement operation in south Minneapolis last Wednesday. Officials from the federal government argue that the officer fired in self-defense as Good attempted to use her car as a weapon while they were trying to arrest her.

In light of the shooting, President Donald Trump and some key administration officials have provided a strong defense of the actions taken by ICE. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders such as Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have contested the federal narrative, denouncing claims of self-defense. The state of Minnesota has since filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging that the increased immigration enforcement was “illegal” and “unprecedented.”

Good’s death has prompted massive protests within Minneapolis as demonstrators across the nation call for changes in federal immigration enforcement practices.

A recent Quinnipiac poll revealed that 82% of respondents have seen the video of the incident. The survey indicated a split opinion among men, with 42% supporting the shooter’s actions and 44% opposing them. Among women, a clear 61% felt the shooting was unjustified.

While only 40% of respondents approved of ICE’s enforcement methods, a larger 57% expressed disapproval, a sentiment that has remained consistent over several months according to previous polling data.

The survey was conducted with 1,133 self-identified registered voters, presenting an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
