Tensions rise for the Lakers as LeBron James' agent advocates for Austin Reaves' trade

Rich Paul from Klutch Sports has noted some tension within the Lakers regarding suggestions to trade fan favorite Austin Reaves to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Jaren Jackson Jr., a two-time All-Star. According to reporter Jovan Buha, there’s been quite a reaction to this idea.

On his podcast “Game Over,” which aired Monday, Paul—who is also LeBron James’ agent—talked about how the Lakers could benefit from Jackson Jr. as a foundational player while brainstorming various trade scenarios.

Buha mentioned on his podcast, “I’m sure people weren’t happy. I won’t go into details, but there was definitely some discontent concerning those comments.”

Paul previously stirred the pot when he implied on another podcast that the Lakers, while not currently favorites, need to position themselves strategically. He remarked, “It’s one thing to be privately considering things; it’s quite another to make them public. It’s atypical for an agent to speak so openly about a player’s team and discuss trades, especially for a player currently seeking a contract.”

Following the Lakers’ convincing win over the Hawks, LeBron distanced himself from Paul’s remarks. He said, “Rich is his own man, and his statements don’t necessarily represent my feelings.” He added, “I hope people recognize that, but if they don’t, that’s on them.”

Interestingly, during halftime, Reggie Berry, one of Reaves’ agents, chatted with Paul for more than five minutes about the trade situation.

James emphasized that he and Paul have differing views on the matter, saying, “AR knows how I feel about him. We talk daily, so I think he understands where I stand. I trust he won’t misinterpret Rich’s words as my stance.”

He pointed out that both he and Paul are adults and that it’s important for people to understand that individual opinions can diverge.

When discussing potential trades, Paul expressed, “If I were the Lakers, I’d aim for the Grizzlies for Jaren Jackson. If you’re planning to build around Luka, you need that solid foundation. Austin is well-loved, which complicates the situation. While making tough decisions for the team is important, Austin deserves to be acknowledged.” He mentioned that Memphis would likely offer Austin significant financial support.

As of now, Reaves hasn’t commented publicly on Paul’s statements.

This marks the second instance in a month where James faced questions regarding Paul’s public commentary on the Lakers. Just last month, after a disheartening loss, Paul had remarked, “Honestly, I don’t think the Lakers have what it takes to be serious contenders right now.”

In response, James said he wasn’t concerned with playoff predictions at this point in the season, stating, “It’s premature to speculate on playoff performance in December.” Currently, the Lakers hold the fifth seed in the Western Conference with a record of 24 wins and 14 losses.
